Servicing a water softener or iron removal system involves an overall check of the unit and fittings, opening the head of the valve and cleaning screens, injectors, backwash ports and check vlaves and where mechanical timers are used these too are opened and checked for wear. Any worn or damaged parts are replaced and these small parts are usually replaced at no extra cost.
Ultra Violets units have bulbs and prefilters, if present, replaced and sleeves cleaned.
Drinking water systems have filters replaced.
Reverse Osmosis units prefilters or all filters and the membrane replace depending on the service required.
All the water you use passes through your water system. On water softeners and iron removal systems any clogging of the screen, injector or backwash port with dirt or accumulated limescale can have a detrimental effect on the units operation, reducing its ability to soften or remove iron and shortening the lifespan of the unit.
Drinking water filters and reverse osmosis filters are either sediment or carbon filters. Sediment filters block with dirt reducing water pressure. In pumped reverse osmosis units this causes the pump to run continuously and eventually fail.
Carbon filters work by absorbing contaminants in the water. Once they have reached their capacity the water is simply passing through them untreated.
Ultra Violet bulbs work by producing a wavelength of light that kills bacteria. From the time they are turned on the wavelength of light emitted changes reducing the units ability to sterilise the water passing through. Some bulbs may fail after a period of time others can stay lit for many years but are simply using electricity with no benefit.
How often should I have my system serviced?
We would recommend that you have your system serviced every two years unless otherwise advised. Systems processing very poor quality water, bacterially contaminated water or high volumes may require a yearly service.
